I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you. I will remove your stony heart from your body and replace it with a living one. - Ezekiel 36:26

Christianity isn’t behavior modification. It’s heart transformation.

There’s a difference.

Behavior modification says, “Stop doing that because Christians aren’t supposed to do that.” Heart transformation says, “I don’t want that anymore because Christ is changing what I desire.” One focuses on controlling what people can see. The other allows God to change what nobody sees.

And that’s important because you can modify behavior without ever surrendering your heart.

You can stop cussing because you’re around church people. You can dress differently because someone told you what Christians should look like. You can show up every Sunday, serve on three ministries, memorize Scripture, raise your hands during worship, and learn exactly when to say “Amen”…while your heart remains prideful, bitter, selfish, unforgiving, lustful, or completely uninterested in knowing God.

That’s religion with really good manners.

God wants deeper.

Ezekiel didn’t say God would give us a better set of habits. God said, “I will give you a new heart.”That’s what makes the gospel so powerful. Jesus doesn’t simply show up with a list of behaviors for broken people to imitate. He changes us from the inside, and eventually what’s happening inside starts showing up outside.

That doesn’t mean behavior doesn’t matter.

It means behavior isn’t the root.

It’s the fruit.

When Christ changes your heart, obedience begins changing too. You forgive differently because your heart understands how much you’ve been forgiven. You love differently because you’ve experienced His love. You give differently because possessions don’t own your heart anymore. You speak differently because God is changing what’s flowing from inside you. You don’t avoid sin merely because somebody told you, “Christians can’t do that.” You begin asking, “Why would I want something that pulls my heart away from Him?”

That’s transformation.

And transformation takes time. We’re still going to stumble. We’re still going to need correction. We’re still going to discover areas we haven’t completely surrendered. But there’s a huge difference between struggling while Christ transforms you and simply learning how to look transformed around Christians.

God isn’t trying to teach the old you how to behave better.

He’s making you new.

So maybe instead of constantly asking, “What am I allowed to do?” we should start asking, “What is Christ producing in me?”

Because you can polish the outside all day…

God still wants the heart.

Here’s the blunt truth: Jesus didn’t die to make bad people behave better. He died so dead hearts could become alive.

Heart Transplant

1. Have I allowed Christ to transform my heart, or have I simply learned how Christians are supposed to behave?

2. Are the changes people see in my life coming from rules I’m trying to follow, or from a relationship with Christ that’s changing what I actually desire?
