Swallowed

Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. - Jonah 1:17
Most people read the story of Jonah and think the whale was God’s punishment. I don’t.
I think the whale was God’s mercy.
Jonah’s problem didn’t begin when the fish swallowed him. It began the moment he decided God’s plan wasn’t as good as his own. God said, “Go.” Jonah said, “No.” Then he booked passage in the opposite direction, convinced he could outrun the One who created the ocean he was sailing on.
Sound familiar?
How many storms in our lives aren’t because God abandoned us…but because we abandoned what He told us to do? We’re quick to blame the devil. Quick to blame people. Quick to blame our circumstances. Quick to ask God, “Why is this happening to me?”
But rarely do we stop and ask, “What was the last thing God asked me to do?” Everybody wants deliverance. Few people want obedience. The fish wasn’t sent to destroy Jonah. It was sent to preserve him.
Without the whale, Jonah drowns. Without the pressure, Jonah never prays. Without the darkness, Jonah never turns. The prison became transportation.
Think about that.
The very thing Jonah thought would be his end became the thing God used to carry him back toward his purpose. How many of us spend our lives praying for God to remove the very thing He’s using to redirect us? Sometimes your whale has fins. Sometimes it looks like anxiety. Sometimes it looks like a broken relationship. Sometimes it looks like losing a job. Sometimes it looks like failure. Sometimes it even looks like success that left you emptier than you expected.
Not every hard season is because you were disobedient. We know that from Job, Joseph, Paul, and ultimately Jesus Himself. But some storms are invitations to stop and ask whether we’ve been running from something God clearly said.
Jonah’s miracle wasn’t when the fish spit him onto the shore. His miracle started in the belly of the fish when he finally stopped running and started praying.
Obedience always begins before deliverance.
Here’s the blunt truth: Stop asking God to remove the whale if He’s using it to move you.

Am I blaming my circumstances before asking whether God has already spoken to me?
What “whale” in my life might actually be God’s mercy redirecting me back to His will?
