Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. - Psalm 62:8

"YoU cAn'T bE mAd At GoD..."

Actually...you can.

You can come to God angry. You can come frustrated, broken, exhausted, confused, or numb. You can ask, "Where were You?" You can pour out every emotion you're carrying because God isn't intimidated by your honesty. He already knows what's in your heart. David cried out. Job questioned. Jeremiah lamented. Even John the Baptist, sitting in prison, sent messengers asking Jesus if He was really the One. God has never rejected someone for bringing Him an honest heart.

The problem isn't asking, "Why?" The problem is building your life around the answer your emotions give you before you've listened to God's Word.

Life hurts. Sometimes you've prayed, tithed, served, obeyed, and still buried someone you loved. Sometimes you've remained faithful while watching people who reject God seem to prosper. Sometimes you've done everything "right" and still found yourself asking, "Where were You?" Those are real questions, and God isn't offended by them.

The enemy, however, loves those moments. If he can't destroy your faith, he'll try to redirect your blame. Jesus said the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, yet somehow we often give the thief's work credit to God. We live in a broken world. Sin has consequences. People have free will. The devil is still a liar. Through all of it, God continues saying the same thing He always has: "Come to Me."

Don't let your feelings become your theology. Bring your feelings to the Word. His Word may not answer every question you have, but it will always remind you who He is. He is near to the brokenhearted. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Nothing can separate you from His love. His character doesn't change just because your circumstances do.

Faith isn't pretending you don't hurt. Faith is bringing your hurt to the only One who can carry it. Pour out your heart before Him, but don't build your home there. Let God heal what you're honest enough to hand over.

Here's the blunt truth: Feel it. Bring it to God. Just don't let your feelings become your god.

Where Were You?

  1. Have I been honest with God about what I'm feeling, or have I been pretending everything is fine?

  1. Am I allowing God's Word to shape my emotions...or my emotions to shape my view of God?
